Hunting – here’s how it should be done

A great deal has been posted these last few days regarding Walter Palmer and the killing of Cecil the Lion, and rightly so. Facebook is now full of pictures of Great Hunters that have shot everything from Lions to Monkeys. Lets hope this has some effect on the Governments and ruling bodies around the world and a ban on Big Game Hunting can be put in place. There is nothing brave or skilful in hunting these animals, not armed with modern equipment – high powered rifles and bows. What is the point!?

I travelled to Africa a couple of years ago and managed to shoot a variety of wild life armed only with a EOS5dII and 70-200 zoom lens. It is a fantastic experience to be so close to these animals and observe them in their natural surroundings. Surely this is the better way of collecting souvenirs. Photographs to hang on your wall, put in albums or post on the internet.

Here we go then, I’ll share some of mine just to show how easy it is to get close to these animals.

The Giraffes are truly beautiful. Amazing creatures. How any one can do harm to these gentle giants is beyond me!

It can be quite intimidating to get so close to a large animal such as a Bull Elephant. This one was a gentle giant minding his own business and just keeping a careful eye on us.

IMG_3583

This one was a different story. Late evening he came out of the brush sounding off, waving his ears and stamping the ground. All signs of aggression according to our guide. I  was glad we were part of a group and had guides to advise us. We still didn’t shoot him though (the Elephant not the guide – though we didn’t shoot the guide either) We simply kept quiet, ignored him and sneaked a picture (of the Elephant not the guide… oh never mind 🙂 )

IMG_3367

We even came across a Hyena with it’s cubs. Here’s one peeping out from the safety of it’s mum. Dad wasn’t far away and he was non too happy. What a noise he set up!

So, did we see any Lions?

We sure did. The were the holy grail of the Safari and we had spent several days without a sighting. We got close a few times and it get’s quite exiting when the guides are busily talking into their walkie talkies communicating with other guides as they try and locate a pride on the move. Those jeeps cant half move and it’s pretty rough terrain – a fantastic experience. Eventually though we did find a pride of Lions. All content (probably after a recent feed) and relaxing in the sun atop a rocky outcrop. Absolutely amazing. This pride were so relaxed they even started mating! An unbelievable experience.

And there we have it. How much nicer would the world be if those millionaire hunters filled their house with beautiful photographs instead of stuffed bodies!

GOOD NIGHT AFRICA AND GOOD LUCK

Boho/Vintage Wedding

A couple of months ago I was lucky enough to photograph Natalie & Ryan’s wedding in the lovely old church of St Mary’s in Bedgelert

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

St Mary’s Church bedgelert

Beddgelert is undoubtedly Snowdonia’s loveliest village. A place of legend, culture and history, set in the heart of Snowdonia National Park. This tiny village is surrounded by mountains, rivers and lakes and is incredibly beautiful.

Anyone that knows mountains though knows that the weather can be, shall we say changeable! When we met at the location a couple of weeks prior to the wedding the weather had really set in. Low mist, rain and freezing winds.

We weren’t going to let that put us off though and had a great time exploring the area and taking a few photos.

Ryan and Natalie

Ryan and Natalie

Natalie and Ryan had put a lot of thought into this wedding. They knew exactly what they wanted and had enjoyed a terrific time planning everything and making it happen. They had found a beautiful location a beautiful church, and managed to locate a wonderful barn nearby to host the reception.

The Brides hotel nestling against the mountains in a beautiful setting

The Grooms hotel just across the river was only 5 minutes walk away

The Wedding had a real vintage style to it reflected in the vintage VW camper that transported the Bride, through to the dresses, jewelry and flowers. Natalie had opted for individual Bridesmaids outfits rather than matching dresses and had chosen something quite different for herself too. The lady has amazing taste, everyone looked fantastic and it made a refreshing change, quite in keeping with the rest of the day.

The Bride and Groom were transported to the reception in the VW camper and a bus was laid on to ferry guests to the barn.

The Barn had a proper vintage makeover; Natalie & Ryan had organised the decoration, the seating plan, and table settings with a little help from their friends.

After the wedding breakfast we took advantage of the late evening sunshine to take some photographs of the Bride and Groom down by the lake. For the group shots we decided to arrange everyone on the naturally hilly landscape. The barn itself had a wonderful walled garden and there was an open fire to keep the chill off.

There aren’t a lot of hotels out in the mountains and Natalie and Ryan had the perfect solution for that. There was a bus to take the less adventurous guests back to civilisation but for those that were up for it (Including Natalie and Ryan) …This

Some people were determined to make every moment last and enjoy the beautiful evening in the heart of Snowdonia – and who can blame them 🙂

Let’s make this moment last.

Outdoor Shoot

I’ve been walking these local woodlands for years and heard stories of Nymphs and fairies. I never really beleived them though until I came across this information sign* that had been erected at the meadow

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Woodland Nymph Information Sign*

That really caught my attention and I decided there and then to camp out in the forest until I managed to find one of these elusive little creatures. It was well worth the wait because before too long I saw a little movement in the grass right in the middle of the meadow and there before my eyes appeared a beautiful little Nymph*  funnily enough, dressed as a hippy.

Little Wood Nymph

I had to wait several minutes before she came into full view and as I kept very quiet she started to stretch and dance (well I guess that’s what they do)

She came out just as the sun was setting and luckily I had brought a Damian McGillicuddy 36″ multi modifier to balance the light with a little off camera flash, and a make up artist just in case lol.

Working fast metering the ever changing light and adjusting the flash to counter the setting sun I managed to fire off several frames before the beautiful Nymph danced off into the woodland.

Liverpool Light Night

LightNight, Liverpool’s one-night arts and culture festival took place on Friday 15 May from 4pm until late as part of One Magnificent City and I was lucky enough to accept a commission to photograph the Light Night Market held at Blackburn House.  As part of this extravaganza night Blackburn House joined forces with some great artists and local talent to showcase them in their magnificent Grade II Listed Building in the Hope Street Quarter

The Night Market was hosted under the big top in collaboration with Nina Dale of  Big Top Events

The Night Market

The Night Market

The Light Night Market brought together  local traders and new up and coming small businesses under the roof of the big top tent in the grounds of Blackburne House. Stalls included Just Juice, Ken’s ‘award winning’ pies, The Liverpool Cheese Company, Parched Tea, Joe Blacks Coffee, Postcode Honey, Cake, The Beady Gekko, The Gateway Collective, Rebbeca Christian, Black Box Arts & Crafts and many more.

Just Juice’s stand proved popular with their range of cold pressed juices, and no wonder; made in the UK with locally sourced ingredients and no additives. You can learn more on their website by clicking here or visit their face book page

You can follow just Juices Blog Here

I can’t believe how busy it was. I just had to run round taking pictures when I could with no time for chatting! I did manage to grab a pie from Kens Award Winning Pies though – very nice too.

Here are a few of the other traders ………….. if you click to enlarge a picture use your back button to return.

This is how busy was in the tent but Nina still managed to lay on some entertainment 🙂

There were loads activities going on outside the tent with everything from live music and performers to ‘TrikeTastic” Bikes and Beekeepers!

There were some fantastic dance troupes and music from The Ormskirk Ukulele Band

And a big fail from me – I didn’t get this dance troupes name but I can tell you they were terrific! Post in comments if you know who they were 🙂

There was even more entertainment to be had over in blackburn house.

Music, Singing, Dancing, Food stalls, Jewellery, Crafts – all well and good but I know that for a lot of ladies the hi-light of the evening (sorry about the pun) was a make up and hair demonstration from the amazing stylists at  &  Russell andBrowns On the night you could even get you hair done for £10.00 I think.

I think you’ll agree – this deserves at least one BIG picture.

Gold

As a  photographer it’s great when you get the opportunity to work with a good Make Up Artist so imagine how chuffed I was when Emily Rose Conner of  ERC Make up and Hair  contacted me with this idea. Something she’d been thinking of for  while – a gold leaf make over.

She brought the perfect model along too – Tara Moore and my assistant & no 2 photographer Kirsty Lyon was on board too. As we were shooting pretty tightly cropped facial shots we didn’t need to bother with a set as such. We simply chose a blue background roll to give us nice contrast to the gold look.

Golden EyeI was using the Olympus EM1 and shooting such close crops gave me a great excuse to use the 75mm f1.8 lens. Shot at f4.o the shallow depth of field makes the gold leaf look almost superimposed but Tara can assure you it was stuck firmly to her face.

We were using a Damian McGillicuddy 19″ beauty dish to create butterfly lighting and that gave us a beautiful catchlight in Tara’s eyes. We used a Mc Gillicuddy lighting panel as a reflector below Tara’s chin to fill in the shadow areas. This created a second catchlight in the lower part of the eye which was cloned out during editing.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This was the finished look at the end of the evening. See what I mean about Make Up Artists? Emily has done a fantastic job on TaraAmazing eyes and hair as well as the gold leaf and how many models are so beautiful they can wear a beard and still look amazing!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We switched the lighting to two large soft boxes so that we could include a little more of Tara. These were arranged at around 45 degrees at the front of the model, as you can see by the twin catchlights, with one light being set 1 stop lower than the other so that the lighting wasn’t too flat. We also lit the background making it lighter

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I think this might be my favourite shot from the session. Tara absolutely gorgeous. Make up absolutely perfect. Photography superb……well ok then but still pretty good hey 🙂

It might be my favourite but that didn’t stop me giving it a full transformation in photoshop.  It can be weird being a photographer. You end up editing late into the night then you are buzzing, so you pour a glass of wine (editing juice) and watch some TV to unwind. This particular night I watched the last half of  Avatar and I thought…….. I know ……………………………

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

All the shots were taken in my studio – Unity Studios based in St Helens.  The studio is sometimes available for hire and we sometimes run introductory classes where you learn to use the lights and get try them out with a pro model as well as more advanced lighting, studio and camera training. If you are interested in keeping up with our antics please pop along and like my Facebook page Chris Doyle Photography  In-box me or email me via my website if you are interested in any training courses.

Young & Suicidal

I was recently commissioned to photograph a new play in Liverpool. I love this kind of work. I love the challenge of shooting live theatre and bands, making the most of the stage lights, sometimes balancing it with a little fill in flash but never overpowering the set lighting. This was a very small & intimate venue http://lanterntheatreliverpool.co.uk so I knew I wouldn’t be using flash at all. ISO set to auto. Fast zoom lens and making good use of the olympus 5 way image stabilisation.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Smith & Natalie …………….. contemplating!

I was really pleased to have this commission as I love the theatre. I love the escapism and the immediacy, but most of all I simply love the magic of it. Maybe it’s because I’m a photographer but I enjoy the lighting and set changes as much as the production and constantly wonder at the genius of the set builders, stage managers and producers. So when I was asked to photograph Young And Suicidal, a new play by James Shaw, I wondered how a low budget play with a cast of two staged in an intimate little theatre could compare to some of the major productions I’ve seen – Phantom, South Pacific, War Horse!?

There is of course no comparison. You can only measure it by the enjoyment and pleasure experienced and of course those lighting and set changes. And on that basis it didn’t disappoint.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Young and Suicidal follows the lives of a guy named Smith (played by Barry Mason) who used the internet to look for a suicide partner  and a girl named Natalie (played by Anna Hudson) who becomes interested his plan.

It’s a difficult subject that’s handled really well. The play was witty, sad, thought provoking and at times bloody hilarious. For me it was marked with that same genius that the big productions have. The sets were so well thought out and the scene changes so well done that you forgot you were watching two actors just 20 feet away. For a couple of hours you were drawn into Smith and Natalie’s world and shared their ups and downs as they came to terms with their lives. And that for me is the magic of Theatre.

Anna Hudson and Barry Mason were really great as Smith & Natalie. It must be so   difficult to hold the audience when there are just two characters, but they did it. They were brilliant and if you ever get the opportunity to see this play………get on it!         Or indeed, if you ever get the opportunity to visit the venue – The Lantern Theatre, then do it. It is a lovely intimate theatre with a wonderful bohemian style bar which is so cosy you will want to stay there forever!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The job was quite a workout for the Olympus OMD EM1 but it proved to be up to the challenge.  Mostly working at 1600 iso with a shutter speed between 1/20th and 1/50th of a second. The Olympus pro 12 to 40 f2.8 zoom meant that I didn’t need to make any lens changes throughout the performance and the flip out screen allowed me to use the camera like an old style waist level finder giving us those great viewpoints. I am more impressed with this camera every time I use it and so glad I gave up my  giant SLR’s. Be sure to follow my blog for more OMD adventures.  Any  questions ……………….. ask away.

Hello world!

Brand new blog so lets start with a brand new venture – A multi million pound wedding venue in St Helens! Berrington hall

With the help of Beverly at Berrington Hall I had the pleasure of producing a Wedding Shoot there prior to the 7th September Wedding Fair.  We were joined by Joy of  Just Joy Events  and her amazing split screen camper van. Art of Wedding and events did a terrific job dressing the venue – tables, ceremony room and  flowers. They even decorated the trees outside with little lanterns.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Great Job decorating the venue – just look at the difference table settings can make! Awww and we loved the little tree lanterns too.

A1 Bridals brought along the Wedding Dresses. The dresses were gorgeous and our models Terri Ann and Kirsty looked beautiful in them all. Make up was by Emily Connor and Emily even stepped up and became a model for the day too. You looked beautiful Emily thanks. No wonder our groom, Sam, had a smile on his face all day.

Just Joy Events brought along their camper van and pop up tea room – how nice. We simply love this.
